Student Intern to Full-Time Position –– Makira Asprey, MSW'25, Reflects on her Experience in the MSW Program

Makira Asprey, MSW'25, is transitioning from her position as a student intern to a full-time counsellor at Haven for Hope Counselling Centre—an opportunity made possible through her advanced field placement in the Master of Social Work program. 

 

"The Master of Social Work program helped me gain the knowledge and experience to enter my field. My placement taught me new approaches, skills, and modalities, which have helped me expand my toolbelt," said Asprey. 

 

"I am excited to have accepted a full-time position with Haven for Hope. It is a true privilege to be part of such meaningful work." 

 

The Advanced Field Placement offers social work Ó£»¨ÊÓÆµdents practical field experience working with individuals, groups, and communities. The focus is on integrating classroom learning with professional experience to develop advanced knowledge and skills for direct practice. 

 

Asprey's experience as a counselling student intern allowed her to support her caseload through the low-to-no-cost counselling program for clients.

Asprey graduated from Ó£»¨ÊÓÆµ with a Bachelor of Arts in 2023 and decided to continue her education at St. Thomas, inspired by an Introduction to Social Work course she took during her undergraduate degree. 

 

"Pursuing social work honours my passion for working with people. After taking a social work course during my BA, it became apparent that social work would be a career path that reflected my values," she said. 

 

"Having had such a positive experience at Ó£»¨ÊÓÆµ, I knew I wanted to stay a part of the community. I am privileged to have been at Ó£»¨ÊÓÆµ for the last five years. Once a Tommie, always a Tommie!"
